WHY A SEPARATE FAMILY

A component and a system are bought differently.

The distinction is not pedantry. An IP core, a gateway or a tag is evaluated on specification and integrated into something else, and the buyer owns the outcome. A complete system is evaluated on whether it works at the site, in the environment, with the people who will operate it — and the outcome is shared.

That changes what has to be engineered. A gateway needs a datasheet; a dispenser on a mine needs a position on hazardous area classification, a defensible metering record, an operator interface usable in gloves and sunlight, and behaviour that is sensible on a day with no coverage.

It also changes the commercial shape. Component products are licensed or sold against a specification. Complete systems are usually engaged as a programme, because deployment, calibration, integration and field support are part of what is being bought rather than services attached afterwards.

How is a connected system different from the other product families?

The other five supply components that go into someone else's product and are evaluated on specification. A complete system is evaluated on whether it works at the site, in the environment, with the people operating it — which changes both what has to be engineered and how it is bought.

Can these be customised?

That is the normal case. Tank sizes, metering approach, interface, enclosure, connectivity and integration targets are all set by the deployment, and the certification route follows from where the system will be used.

Are these off-the-shelf or engineered per deployment?

Closer to the latter. There is a platform and a proven architecture behind each, but classification, metering approach, integration and field procedures are established per programme rather than shipped as a fixed configuration.
