NTN Asset Tracking

Pallets and assets do not stay under cellular coverage — they cross deserts, oceans, mountains and the sky, where there is no network at all. Faststream builds the trackers, modems and modules that keep them reporting over satellite, cellular-first with NTN as continuity, so the record never goes dark where visibility matters most.

THE PROBLEM

Coverage is not continuous.

A tracker that only speaks cellular goes silent exactly where you most need to see it — the long desert haul, the mid-ocean leg, the valley with no line-of-sight to a mast, the cargo hold at altitude. For high-value or perishable goods, the gap is not a data inconvenience; it is the part of the journey where loss, theft and spoilage actually happen, and it is invisible.

The fix is not a different single network. It is a device that uses whatever is available: cellular where it exists, satellite where it does not, GNSS for position throughout, and a buffer that holds every reading until a link returns.

THE ANSWER

NTN, cellular-first.

Non-terrestrial networks extend the same low-power IoT links — NB-IoT and 5G NR — over satellite. That means the same class of device, the same identity, and a path to the sky when there is no path to a tower. The design pattern is cellular-first continuity: use terrestrial cellular where it is available because it is cheaper and faster, fall back to NTN where it is not, and store-and-forward across the gap so nothing is lost. GNSS runs independently, so position is always known even while the asset is out of contact.

The hard parts are real: satellite Doppler and latency, a power budget where a single satellite transmission costs far more than a cellular one yet the tracker must last years, and an antenna that has to work on a tumbling pallet next to metal and liquid. Those are exactly the problems our silicon, RF and embedded teams are built for.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions asked before a programme.

01

How do you track an asset where there is no cellular coverage?

With non-terrestrial networks. NB-IoT NTN and NR NTN put the same low-power IoT link over satellite, so a tracker that has no mast in range reports over the sky instead. The usual pattern is cellular-first (cheaper, higher rate) with satellite as continuity, and store-and-forward across the gaps so nothing is lost.

02

What is NTN?

Non-terrestrial network — the 3GPP extension that lets standard cellular IoT (NB-IoT) and 5G NR operate via satellite. It brings the same devices and SIM-based identity to places terrestrial networks do not reach.

03

How is position known without a data link?

GNSS. The tracker gets its own fix independently of how it reports, so position is logged even while it is out of contact, then sent when a link — cellular or satellite — is next available.

04

What makes NTN tracking hard to engineer?

Satellite Doppler and latency, a tiny power budget (a satellite transmission costs far more energy than a cellular one, yet the tracker must run for years), and an antenna that has to work omnidirectionally on a moving pallet near metal and liquid. Those are the problems Faststream solves.

05

Can you track at the item level, not just the pallet?

That is the direction of our battery-free item-level tag research — taking visibility below the pallet. It is active R&D rather than a shipping product; the NTN trackers here operate at the asset and pallet level today.
