Ultra-low-jitter Clocking

Phase-locked loop and clock generation IP where jitter is the binding specification. In a high-speed link or a data converter, clock jitter translates directly into an error floor that no amount of downstream processing recovers.

PLLClockingJitter
WHAT IT IS

The short version.

Clock jitter is uncertainty about when an edge occurred. In a serial link it eats the timing margin the receiver needs to sample reliably. In a data converter it appears as noise on the sampled signal, worse at higher input frequencies, and it sets a signal-to-noise ratio ceiling that no filtering removes.

So in both cases the clock is not a supporting component. It is a specification-limiting one, and designing it as an afterthought produces a system that cannot meet its numbers for reasons that appear to originate elsewhere.

The design work is in the loop architecture, the oscillator, the supply isolation and the distribution — a clean PLL distributed through a noisy network arrives dirty.

Next step

Send the target node, the interface requirements and the integration context. If this is not the right fit, that will be said early rather than discovered at integration.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions asked before an evaluation.

01

Why does clock jitter matter so much?

In a serial link it consumes the timing margin the receiver needs to sample reliably. In a data converter it appears as noise on the sampled signal, worse at higher input frequencies, setting a signal-to-noise ceiling that downstream processing cannot recover.

02

Is a clean PLL sufficient on its own?

No. Distribution matters as much as generation — a clean clock routed through a noisy network with poor supply isolation arrives degraded, which is why distribution strategy is part of the scope.
