Fleet Telematics Unit

Vehicle tracking, utilisation and driver behaviour telemetry, reading from the vehicle network as well as from GNSS. Coverage across a mixed fleet is a specific engineering task rather than something a datasheet delivers.

WHAT IT IS

The short version.

Position is the easy part of telematics. The valuable data is on the vehicle network: engine and fuel parameters, diagnostic codes, driver inputs, odometry that does not drift. Reading it reliably across a fleet containing several makes and model years is the actual engineering.

The environment is the second constraint. Supply that dips during cranking and spikes on load dump, temperatures from below freezing to what a dashboard reaches in sun, continuous vibration, and coverage that disappears in tunnels and underground car parks.

A unit that resets on cranking loses a trip. One that resets on cranking every morning loses the customer, which is why the electrical design gets more attention than the feature list.

Maturity — silicon-proven, FPGA-validated or RTL stage — is confirmed at enquiry for the specific configuration you need, rather than claimed generically here.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

Deliverables and support.

Next step

Send the target node, the interface requirements and the integration context. If this is not the right fit, that will be said early rather than discovered at integration.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions asked before an evaluation.

01

What data can a telematics unit read from a vehicle?

Position and motion from GNSS and inertial sensing, plus engine, fuel, diagnostic and driver-input data from the vehicle network over CAN or OBD — subject to what each manufacturer exposes, which varies across a mixed fleet.

02

How do fleet systems handle coverage gaps?

By buffering on the device and forwarding when coverage returns, and by evaluating geofences and alerts locally so they still fire without a network.

03

Why does the electrical environment matter so much?

Because supply dips during cranking and spikes on load dump. A unit that resets during cranking loses a trip, and one that does it every morning loses the customer.
