What is a digital twin actually used for?
Comparing measured behaviour against modelled expectation. The deviation between them is detectable long before an absolute threshold is crossed, which is where the lead time for intervention comes from.
Asset projection, monitoring and control against a live model, so that measured behaviour can be compared with expected behaviour rather than only recorded. The value is in the difference between the two, not in the model itself.
A digital twin is a model of an asset kept in step with the real one using live data. Stated that way it sounds like visualisation, and a great many twin projects are exactly that — an expensive rendering of what a dashboard already showed.
The useful version is comparative. If the model says the pump should be drawing this much power at this flow, and it is drawing more, something has changed. That difference is detectable long before an absolute threshold is crossed, which is where the lead time comes from.
It also supports asking questions that cannot be asked of the real asset: what happens at a duty point it has not been run at, what the consequence of a setting change would be, how a fault would present.
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Function | Live model of an asset, kept in step with measured data |
| Value | Comparison of expected and measured behaviour, not visualisation alone |
| Uses | Monitoring, anomaly detection, scenario evaluation and control |
| Inputs | Telemetry from sensors, controllers and process systems |
| Typical markets | Industrial, energy, infrastructure, process |
Maturity — silicon-proven, FPGA-validated or RTL stage — is confirmed at enquiry for the specific configuration you need, rather than claimed generically here.
Send the target node, the interface requirements and the integration context. If this is not the right fit, that will be said early rather than discovered at integration.

A dashboard shows what is happening. A twin shows what should be happening alongside it, so the difference becomes the signal rather than requiring an operator to know the expected value.
