eCPRI IP Core

The eCPRI IP core is the fronthaul interface of an O-RAN radio — the block that packs frequency-domain IQ, carries the control, timing and management planes, and moves them over Ethernet between the O-RU and the O-DU. It is where the 7.2x split is actually realised, and where its sub-microsecond timing is won or lost.

WHAT IT DOES

The four planes, over Ethernet.

eCPRI replaced CPRI's rigid time-domain streams with packetised, frequency-domain transport — which is what makes Ethernet fronthaul and a multi-vendor radio possible. The core carries four planes.

WHY IT IS HARD

Timing and bandwidth, at once.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What engineers ask about this.

01

What is eCPRI, and how is it different from CPRI?

CPRI carried raw time-domain IQ over a dedicated, constant-bitrate link — simple but enormously bandwidth-hungry and point-to-point. eCPRI is packet-based over standard Ethernet and carries frequency-domain IQ for the 7.2x split, which cuts fronthaul bandwidth dramatically and lets the fronthaul share Ethernet transport and be multi-vendor. It is the interface O-RAN standardised between the O-RU and O-DU.

02

What are the U, C, S and M planes?

Four logical planes on the fronthaul: U-plane is the user-data IQ transport, C-plane is the real-time control (scheduling and beamforming) that describes it, S-plane is synchronisation (PTP/SyncE timing), and M-plane is management (NETCONF/YANG configuration). The CUS-plane and M-plane are specified by O-RAN WG4.

03

Does the core compress the IQ?

Yes. The U-plane uses block-floating-point (BFP) compression, the most common O-RAN method, to bring frequency-domain IQ down to a bandwidth a 25/10 GbE fronthaul can carry — especially for wide carriers and massive-MIMO antenna counts. Other methods (modulation compression, µ-law) exist; BFP is the baseline.

04

What synchronisation does eCPRI need?

Sub-microsecond, held by PTP (IEEE 1588 telecom profiles) with SyncE for frequency. The S-plane is the tightest constraint in the whole fronthaul: the O-RU and O-DU must agree on time closely enough that the 7.2x split stays coherent, which is why timing is designed in from the start rather than tuned at the end.
