RAIN RFID Tags and Readers

UHF and HF RFID tags and readers for inventory, access control and traceability, where a portal read at a choke point answers the question rather than continuous tracking. Passive tags cost very little, which is what makes tagging everything viable.

WHAT IT IS

The short version.

RAIN RFID is the name most of this market procures under. It refers to UHF passive RFID built on the EPC Gen2 air interface, standardised as ISO/IEC 18000-63 and promoted under the RAIN Alliance. When a retailer, a logistics operator or an apparel brand says RFID, this is almost always what they mean.

RFID answers a different question from real-time location. It tells you that an item passed a point — through a door, onto a lorry, past a station — rather than where it is at every moment. For a great many operational problems that is the question that was actually being asked.

The economics follow from passive tags. They have no battery, cost a fraction of an active tag, and last as long as the item does, which makes tagging every unit viable in a way that active tracking is not.

UHF gives range of a few metres and works for portal and bulk reads. HF gives shorter range with better behaviour near metal and liquid, and is used where the read has to be reliable rather than distant.

What is RAIN RFID?

UHF passive RFID built on the EPC Gen2 air interface and standardised as ISO/IEC 18000-63, promoted under the RAIN Alliance. It is the technology behind most retail, apparel and logistics item tagging, and is what people usually mean by RFID in a supply chain context.

Is RAIN RFID the same as NFC?

No. RAIN operates in the UHF band around 860 to 960 MHz using backscatter, and reads at metres and in bulk. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz using inductive coupling, reads at touching distance, and is built around deliberate secure exchange. They share a family name and very little else.

Why do RAIN deployments need regional tuning?

Because the UHF allocation differs by market — band and permitted power are not the same in Europe, North America and Asia. Tags and readers are tuned per territory, so a design validated in one region is not automatically compliant in another.

What is the difference between RFID and BLE for tracking?

RFID tells you an item passed a point, using passive tags that cost very little and never need batteries. BLE tells you approximately where an item is at any time, using active tags with a multi-year battery. They answer different questions.

When should HF be used instead of UHF?

Where the read must be reliable rather than distant, particularly near metal and liquid, which degrade UHF performance considerably. UHF is preferred for portal and bulk reads at a few metres.
